Skibbereen Regatta Day 2: UCC clean sweep in senior sculling events

The third and final day's racing of the weekend was relatively quiet for the UCCRC squad. First up Ciarán raced over 2000m for the first time in the single having raced for the first time in the double yesterday with Ger. This wasn't about the result, the experience will be of great value moving into the rest of the season.
Next up was the two intermediate doubles of 'A' Deirdre and Saoirse versus 'B' Niamh and Roisin. In the heat the two crews crossed the line within half a length of each other setting up a fight in the final for the intermediate medals. The third race of the morning saw Justin and Andy racing in the senior double, also in their division was the Irish U23 double of Shane O'Driscoll and Garry O'Donovan. Justin and Andy, did well to track the experienced double down the course to set up the A final.
In the morning's finals Saoirse and Deirdre went 9 seconds faster to record a win over UCC rivals Niamh and Roisin in the intermediate double. In the men's senior double Justin and Andy moved out of the blocks sigificantly faster than their heat to put the U23 double under pressure. The U23 boat moved ahead but never got away. These two quality crews pushed themselves well clear of the field assuring UCC of the senior win and going 7 seconds faster than their heat.
The final race of the morning was a straight final in the senior coxless four. A scratch crew of Stephen, David, Padraic and Seán jumped into the boat and put up a good race nearly charging down NUIG on the line for third place.
In the afternoon UCC had Deirdre racing in the Club single. Deirdre secured a birth in the A final via her 9th race of the weekend, in which she came third. In the final Deirdre moved up one place to 2nd, closing the gap on the winner from 16 seconds in the heat to 4 seconds in the final. This was Deirdre's 20th kilometer of racing for the weekend and concluded UCCRC's involvement in the regatta.
Three days of racing, Ten wins including all the men's senior sculling events at Skibbereen Regatta and two of three of the women's intermediate sculling events, coming a close second in the third. A strong start to the season's racing, the squad will now have a light week before going into the next stage of preparation for the sharp end of the season.
