3 Squad Gym sessions down and as, 45 weeks worth more to go. Initial screening has shown up some areas in need of attention. As expected this is not simply a case of needing stronger legs or arms but making sure the body is mobile enough to execute the rowing stroke well and that the correct muscles are being utilised.
To not be able to launch straight into throwing huge pieces of metal about might seem a compromise and perhaps it is right now. However I am certain that once the squad has addressed the current issues the long term strength and power gains will be greater and longer lasting.
It was certainly very positive to see the squad getting on with the exercises on Thursday evening, it was also great to see the strength and conditioning coach so enthused to be working with driven athletes. It is quite easy to do these kind of exercises badly and thus make no gains so having a specialist to hand is a massive boost to the effectiveness of the session.
