First day back on the water since the Christmas break. 16k and 12k with exercises, the lake laid on it's standard fair of grey weather with a final flurry of damp. Everyone back or accounted for with just a couple suffering from illness, let's hope we can stay healthy. Excellent news is that we have another female sculler joining us for the rest of the season, this will make it more competitive which is good for all!
There seems to be a sense of continuing rather than starting again which is essential at this time of year. The 5k test on Monday will show me some more hard data on this. It is important that the momentum remains with the group through late January and early February, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking the new year is the lowest point in the Winter meat grinder and that things will start to get brighter and more interesting from now on. We are just over three months into the season, another three months will take us up to the beginning of April- still well before the main objectives of the season. This means that early February can still feel a long way from racing side by side in the Sun, especially during 20k in the rain.
Finally, some people like to go swimming in frozen lakes as a new year's treat, our lake isn't frozen but this never stops Mike:
