7:30am on a Wednesday morning in January mid 18k ergo is not a moment that one would expect to get particularly excited about anything but then there is nothing expected about this job other than it rains and the Sun is quite shy in these parts. Nonetheless this morning there was such a moment, a moment when I could see people moving as a squad, still with faults and plenty of work to do on wattage output but there is no doubt that there is a squad pattern emerging. Good to see.
Also good to see a near 100% turn-out from the novices in the Squad Gym last night, an 8-9pm slot isn't ideal but we are fortunate to have been given the extra slots, something earned by the squads demonstrating commitment over the last 18 months. The novice sessions will start quite slowly with people learning the exercises, and I am sure one or two will want to do much more now. However, if they get it right I am confident that they will give themselves the right technique to ultimately lift plenty and with time the requests to do more will wither away...
In other news a steady influx of communication is developing regarding coming to UCC in future years. There is a huge difference between emailing the coach in January and being at the College getting on with the training throughout the year but it shows we are appearing on some people's radar, another little step.
One final thing, this idea of January blues, it's for lazy journalists to fill tedious column inches with. January is the beginning of a new year, an opportunity to get stuck into new projects or re-energize ongoing projects. Falling behind the curve now isn't an option if one is to escape the gravitational pull of mediocrity.
