New Season

Time to put some life back into this blog, can't promise it will last...
First weekend back on the water since July. Some familiar faces and some new ones out in pairs and sculls. Just 12k each day followed by a session of drills and technical work. Saturday was sunny but Sunday reminded me why I wore my big red waterproof suit for almost every session last season.
There are some good steps on this season compared to 2011. We are at the NRC from the outset this year rather than March, the squad organisation is established already (this was done after Intervarsities last season) and we have our ergs in the Mardyke Arena rather than Cork Boat Club in Blackrock. We also have a few older heads at training who will be reforming the Old Bones alumni club in the New Year.
The  Performance Development Group's aim for training this side of Christmas is to build volume both on and off the water and develop the correct movement pattern into every athlete. Focus on the quality of movement is critical on the water and in the gym, every lift is training the body to move a particular way. If this is not transferable to moving the boat then it is either of no use or, even worse, counter-productive.
