Irish University Rowing Championships 2014

Three of the four pennants won today
UCCRC have started the 2014 regatta season with four wins at the 2014 Irish University Championships. In the other three events entered by the squad there was one 2nd place and two 3rd place results. An excellent days racing.
The first race of the day was a straight final in the Women's Intermediate 2x. Niamh and Deirdre sculled very well to hold off a strong Queens crew and were only two lengths off a very experienced Trinity crew.
The first win of the day came in the Senior Pair with David and Andy jumping into the boat for the first time together. Something clicked as they rowed clear of NUIG, Trinity and UCD to secure a first senior sweep win for the college in many years.
In the Intermediate single, Stephen showed just how far he has come since joining the squad in January with a decisive win. This was followed immediately by his having to jump into the bow seat of the quad to row back up to the start, which was then delayed due to neither Queens nor Trinity managing such a swift turnaround. The delay didn't phase Stephen, David, Andy and Justin who held off a strong Queens quad to win by just over half a length.

The final race of the day for UCCRC was the Women's Intermediate coxed four. The girls were challenged strongly by the University of Limerick but responded superbly to win by a length.
This was the first day of three days of racing that will see UCC race over 30 different combinations and this was an exciting start. I look forward to seeing how the squad react to the different challenges of Saturday and Sunday.
