Day 2

Congratulations today to our UCC scullers Deirdre O'Sullivan and Mark Stanton. Both made it to their respective finals, dealing with an increasing headwind through the day. Six weeks ago Deirdre stated her aim as making this final and I am delighted to see her do this. Deirdre and Nichola have been sculling for a couple of months now and have made great improvements in that time. Their attitude to training and all things rowing has been outstanding, an absolute pleasure to coach. Having these two ladies in the squad for 2014 will be a huge step on from the beginning of this season.
Also racing today was the Intermediate 8. It was a straight final versus Trinity, NUIG and UCD. NUIG took a one length win over UCD with UCC another length back, 3 feet in front of Trinity. The lads were disappointed with the result, this is a massive indication of how far this squad has come this season.
None of this squad expressed an expectation that they would be racing Intermediate 8's when goal setting was discussed in the Winter.
Losing is not good, losing can however be the greatest fuel. Many of this crew will return, wiser, fitter, stronger and faster.
The assumed hierarchy stands... for now.
