About 8 months ago I wrote a post titled 39 steps referring to the 39 weekends left until the Irish Rowing Championships. Well guess what? There are now three weekends left. Since that point in time athletes and crews all over Ireland have put in 36 weeks of water sessions, ergs and whatever else the coach has felt necessary to move the squads on. Since that time hundreds of students all over Ireland have found the going too tough and made their final excuse leaving a deserving few.
In any squad this time of year is the best in the rowing calender. The great body of work is done, the final objective is in sight. In a university squad this time of year is even better, the buzz created by the proximity to the season's goals is enhanced by exams being over and athletes being able to enjoy the sport free from their academic concerns.
