Catching up

Seeing this on the forecast is getting a little tedious:
This weather has seen the Varsity/Skib' regatta weekend postponed and as a result we haven't raced for months. We are now entered at Queens on April 27th so fingers crossed the weather Gods permit it to go ahead.
Regardless of the weather the squads are developing well. It is very impressive that the numbers have held and the momentum of training, although clearly frustrated is still moving in the right direction. The most exciting aspect is the introduction of this years beginners into the full training squad. This adds mass to training and should provide a healthy competitive edge that should certainly help to move things on over the next three months.
The coming months have challenges to overcome, chiefly the exam period of May but also have the motivating factors of regattas and longer hours of light that will allow us to train on the water mid-week. UCC exams finish at the end of May so we are able to train extensively in June and early July so the opportunities for progress are huge especially as the squads have managed to get a significant body of training done over the Autumn, Winter and Spring ( Which have in fact been just the one season..). This time last year we had been at the National Rowing Centre for two months and were struggling to maintain a routine or get crew boats of any competitive level out. This year at Varsities we had 16 crews entered and at Queens we have 15. Last year it was just me coaching, now there are four coaches: John, Joe, Sanita and myself. The most encouraging thing is that these coaches are asking to add sessions, if it is true that coaches are motivated by motivated athletes then this is a very positive sign.
The above is positive, but to date it is signs, indications and interpretations. Over the next three months UCCRC must go racing and do it's absolute best to make it's mark on the season.
